Jumoke Academy, one of the first charter schools approved under Connecticut's charter school legislation in February, 1997, is a free public school of choice, open to any interested family residing in Hartford or surrounding communities.
Our mission:
The mission of Jumoke Academy is to prepare children in kindergarten through grade six to compete in the global marketplace, even as they face social and economic challenges.
In order to achieve its mission, Jumoke Academy:
* has a clear academic mission;
* provides a safe, orderly and secure environment;
* provides opportunities and experiences that allow students to spend quality time on task performance;
* provides opportunities for staff development;
* keeps class size small, with fewer than 20 students in each class with a teacher and a paraprofessional.
Our school day runs from 9 am to 4 pm. Our school year closely follows the same calendar as Hartford, including holidays and emergency school closings. Before- and after-school programs are offered from 7 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm.
Our students:
Jumoke Academy currently has students enrolled from Hartford, East Hartford, Bloomfield, Glastonbury, Manchester, Windsor, South Windsor, and West Hartford. During the 2000 - 2001 school year, we will have 230 students enrolled. We currently have a waiting list of over 150 students.
Special features of our program:
* Our students receive individual attention in smaller classes: our student-teacher ratio is 13 to 1.
* In addition to the traditional core subjects, all students receive Spanish language and computer instruction.
* A "looping" process keeps students with teachers for two years, allowing teachers to build deeper relationships with students and their families.
* Students learn about computers in a lab equipped with an individual computer for each child in a class.
* Students participate in afterschool activities that include Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, karate, tutoring, chess, and computer club.
